Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug use. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals comprehend the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol.
