Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased risk of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs.
