Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater risk of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services might be more tailored for everybody so that their own problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
