Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated risk of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be at hand which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug use. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services might be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their unique challenges can be handled in rehabilitation.
