Hearing impaired individuals generally have an elevated probability of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services should be at hand which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their own personal challenges can be addressed in rehab.
