Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased likelihood of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehab services have to be available to them which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals comprehend the challenges these clients face.
