Hearing impaired persons generally have an elevated chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for each person to ensure that their unique challenges can be addressed in rehab.
