Hearing impaired persons generally have an elevated probability of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each person to ensure their unique problems can be remedied in treatment.
