Hearing impaired individuals generally have a heightened probability of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for everybody so that their unique challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
