Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater chance of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be at hand which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as well as rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol.
