Hearing impaired persons tend to have a greater risk of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support so that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their unique challenges can be treated in rehabilitation.
