Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased probability of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be available which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each person to ensure their unique challenges can be addressed in rehabilitation.
