Hearing impaired men and women generally have an elevated chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services have to be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support so that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their own challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
