Offering gender-specific treatment services has shown to be worthwhile in circumstances where standard rehabilitation settings have not meet expectations, like coping with situations inside a women's life which can be distinctive and distressing. Such issues may pertain to sexual abuse, physical trauma, mental abuse, eating disorders, one's family and motherhood, or other serious issues that are specific to women. Research shows that women also can become involved in substance abuse more readily than men, and so are more vulnerable to illness as a result of addiction problems than males because of this. Due to obligations in the home, women also tend to put off looking for and receiving treatment, a circumstance which can be a catalyst for disaster. With this in mind, treatment services for women are designed in order that a women's needs are the focus and priority. Similar to coed facilities, drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities which provide rehabilitation services to women help women through detox and withdrawal as a first step. Following this step, counselors help women concentrate on both basic and gender specific issues who have prompted their drug or alcohol use. Women also utilize the constructive support from their female peers, and several facilities which offer rehab services to women provide client beds for their kids.
