Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased probability of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services might be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their own challenges can be remedied in rehab.
