Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened chance of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug use. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure their own personal problems can be remedied in treatment.
