Hearing impaired men and women generally have a greater probability of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support in order that treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for everybody so that their unique problems can be treated in rehab.
