Hearing impaired persons tend to have an increased probability of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug use. However, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs.
