Hearing impaired individuals generally have an elevated likelihood of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be at hand which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their own problems can be handled in rehabilitation.
