Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services have to be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for everybody so that their particular problems can be addressed in rehabilitation.
