Hearing impaired persons tend to have an elevated probability of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailor-made for each individual so that their own challenges can be remedied in treatment.
