Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which serves their needs. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure their particular problems can be remedied in rehabilitation.
