Hearing impaired individuals generally have a heightened chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services might be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their unique problems can be handled in rehabilitation.
