Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened chance of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be available which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure their own problems can be treated in treatment.
