Hearing impaired individuals generally have an elevated probability of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be available which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure that their own challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
