Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater probability of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services might be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their unique problems can be remedied in rehab.
