Sadly, the simple truth is that millions of people make the decision to drive an automobile while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs. This not just puts one's life at risk and puts passengers and others in danger also, but being caught driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will typically bring about severe penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, fines and even prison time. Often times somebody who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately has an underlying drug abuse problem. The court system knows this, and it is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders alcohol and drug rehabilitation as an alternative to other serious consequences for crime. Agreeing or obliging to participate in drug and alcohol rehab as a DUI/DWI Offender may not completely eradicate other consequences of the crime, but can decrease the severity of such penalties to some great extent. Particularly if the person willingly participates in alcohol and drug rehab and is also a first-time offender. Studies have shown that a large proportion of individuals who do receive drug rehab because of a DUI/DWI offense stay out of the court system for comparable charges later on.
