Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased risk of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be at hand which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, drug rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support in order that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure their own challenges can be treated in treatment.
