Hearing impaired individuals generally have a greater likelihood of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be available which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter.
