Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each person so that their own personal challenges can be addressed in rehabilitation.
