Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened risk of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services might be more tailor-made for each person so that their own personal challenges can be handled in treatment.
