Hearing impaired persons tend to have an increased chance of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services must be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as well as rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailor-made for everybody so that their own personal problems can be handled in rehab.
