Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened probability of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as well as rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services might be more tailor-made for each individual so that their own personal problems can be addressed in rehab.
