Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened probability of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their own problems can be treated in rehab.
