Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased risk of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Nonetheless, drug rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for each person so that their own problems can be remedied in rehab.
