Offering gender-specific rehabilitation services has shown to be beneficial in circumstances where traditional rehab settings have not meet expectations, like coping with situations within a women's life that happen to be unique and distressing. Such difficulties may have to do with sexual abuse, physical abuse, mental abuse, eating disorders, one's family and motherhood, or any other significant issues which are specific to women. Research has shown that women could also become involved in substance abuse more readily than men, and therefore are more predisposed to sickness due to dependency problems than males consequently. Because of responsibilities in the home, women also tend to postpone looking for and receiving care for addiction, a circumstance which can be a catalyst for catastrophe. With this in mind, treatment services for women are designed in order that a women's needs are the focus and priority. Similar to coed facilities, drug and alcohol rehab programs which provide treatment solutions to women help women through detox and withdrawal as a starting point. After this step, counselors help women concentrate on both general and gender-specific issues who have triggered their drug abuse. Women also may take advantage of the beneficial support from other female peers, and a few programs that provide treatment services to women offer client beds for her children.
