Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened chance of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals comprehend the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure their own problems can be treated in rehab.
