Hearing impaired men and women generally have an elevated chance of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services have to be at hand which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support to ensure treatment clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each person so that their unique problems can be treated in rehab.
