Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be available which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support to ensure rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs.
