Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened chance of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. However, drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face.
