Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug use. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for everybody to ensure their particular problems can be addressed in rehabilitation.
