Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater risk of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions in order that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for each individual so that their unique problems can be treated in treatment.
