Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened chance of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be available which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure their own personal challenges can be addressed in rehabilitation.
