Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased chance of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services have to be at hand which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face.
