Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened probability of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services should be available which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services might be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their own personal challenges can be treated in treatment.
