Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater likelihood of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be available which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face.
