Being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS may set off drug use, or risky sexual conduct as a result of drug abuse may have caused the person to contract the illness. People who have HIV/AIDS, either due to their drug use or as a pre-existing condition just before their substance abuse problem, frequently require treatment services tailored in order to meet their specific needs and problems. Many of these challenges are physical in nature, due to the fact that substance abusers with HIV/AIDS almost never care for themselves and take the appropriate medications they need to maintain their own health. Therefore, these individuals arrive to rehab in very poor health and this will have to be addressed as a priority whilst dealing with other important issues. Apart from the obvious requirement to deliver medical services while in treatment, people who have HIV/AIDS should also address deeper issues which brought about their drug or alcohol use. Very often, individuals have situations within their lives that are purely environmental which may have caused them to use drugs or alcohol, including oppressive circumstances in their lives or negative relationships. These are the concerns which rehabilitation counselors will concentrate on as part of HIV/AIDS rehabilitation services.
