Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased risk of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse.
