Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be available which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as well as rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support in order that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services might be more tailor-made for everybody so that their own personal problems can be addressed in treatment.
