Hearing impaired individuals generally have a greater likelihood of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each person to ensure their own personal problems can be remedied in treatment.
